Macassar
Sheikh Yusuf of Makassar is credited with being the 'Father of Islam' in South Africa and was banished to the Cape in 1694 with 49 followers, and although he only lived for five years in Cape Town, his impact has been a source of inspiration to the likes of Nelson Mandela.
Deer Park
Oral history relates that the grave of Sayed Abdul Haq was discovered by a lady who used to do her washing at the mountain stream. She regularly saw a person performing his prayers at this site.
Oudekraal
Sheikh Noorul Mubeen was apparently banished to the Cape in 1716 and incarcerated on Robben Island. According to a popular legend he escaped from Robben Island by unknown means and came to make his home in this desolate spot.
Signal Hill
According to oral tradition, Sheikh Mohamed Hassen Ghaibie Shah was a follower of Sheikh Yusuf of Makassar and did not return to Indonesia after the death of Sheikh Yusuf.
Klein Constantia
Sayed Mahmud was a spiritual and religious leader of the Malaccan Empire. He was a man of wealth and influence brought to the Cape in chains on 13 May 1668.
